The Perry District Dominates the Spokane Food Scene
For years, when you talked about the Washington food scene, the conversation was invariably about Seattle. But times have changed, and in the last 5-10 years, Spokane has bloomed like an onion, making headlines nationwide for its coveted status as a haven for foodies. The Los Angeles Times declared Spokane a city to “eat your heart out” in, and even the revered Wall Street Journal named Spokane as one of the top 6 small cities for foodies.
But if you already live in Spokane, this likely comes as no surprise. The local food scene is fresher than the produce at the farmers markets, with the beer, wine, and whiskey to match. But if you’re looking for the best neighborhood for foodies to live, breathe, and eat, the Perry District will leave you covered, smothered, and ready for more.
The Perry District is Fresh & Local
The Perry District is a must-try for hipsters and Boomers alike. Josi H.’s review on Yelp describes the Perry District as “such a quaint little slice of perfect in Spokane. It's a getaway spot right below the South Hill.” One of the best farmers markets in the city calls the Perry District home, which sets the tone for a strong focus on local and fresh ingredients. The Thursday Market can be found at 924 S. Perry from 3:00 to 7:00 every Thursday from the start of May to the end of October. In addition to being one of the longest running markets in the city, it has also been voted Best Market 5 years in a row (wow)! Something else cool about the Thursday Market - they accept debit, credit, cash, and EBT/SNAP cards.
If you’re too exhausted after shopping at the farmers markets to actually cook any of that food, you’ll want to grab a beer and bite at one of the many local restaurants and tap houses.
Breweries and Tap Houses in the Perry District
The Lantern Tap House is a neighborhood establishment offering craft beer, wine, and scratch-made food. Reviewers on Yelp often comment on the The Lantern’s warm, "old-world" environment, complete with 150 year old barnwood decor, a fireplace, and church pews from the 1890s.
Perry Street Brewing prides itself on being a true local brewery and taphouse, serving up Northwest-style favorites and Belgian beers, as well as local wine and cider. This brewery supports local causes and boasts a locally-focused menu. And while you’re there, be sure to try their 2016 Great American Beer Festival gold-medal winning India Pale Lager!
Manito Tap House is the perfect place to experience organic, fresh, and local food paired with your choice from over 50 local and regional beers on tap. In fact, this combination is so beloved by Spokanites and visitors alike that Manito Tap House was voted Best Tap House in Washington State!
The Grain Shed deals in everything grain related, doubling as both a bakery and a brewery. Like many restaurants in the Perry District, The Grain Shed gets all of their grains from farmers in and around Spokane, and mills them themselves, in house. The beer is great and the bread products are world class.
